The SmartStart application from Directed Electronics for Android device supplies a number of conveniences to its users in remote regulation of their cars that differ slightly per app module type.

The most common features for all the three modules of this application are: remote car starter, lock and unlock, panic (the car finder) and trunk release. Even taken separately every one of these features makes the SmartStart app worth having.

For additional convenience this application offers the following as well: a 2-Way confirmation of commands received at the vehicle, Smart Alerts sent via SMS (text messaging), security alert messages, error messages for all Viper systems if the command cannot be executed at the vehicle. An additional Find a Dealer tool is also available with dealersҠlocations to find the nearest one quickly; passcode protections with password management through confirmation sounds is also available.

The basic system, the SmartStart Module (VSM200- $299.00) allows the follows remote access to your car: smartstart, trunk, lock, unlock and panic (for the cases when you canӴ find your car). This system requires Android smartphone, a compatible Viper system installed in your car, and activated service plan with the provider.

The Viper SmartStart Remote Start System (VSS3000 - $399.00) has the same requirements for device and system and the same functions as the SmartStart Module with the only additional option of remote start function for multiple cars.

And the Viper SmartStart Security Remote Start System (VSS5000 - $599.00), has several additional security features not included in the previous two modules.

You need to do the following three things to Set up SmartStart : to download the Viper SmartStart application (available also free) to your Android smartphone; install the SmartStart in you car; select and set up a service plan account for your SmartStart throught the SmartStart website.

Even if you get the Android Viper app free and install it properly both on your smartphone and your vehicle, it still will not function in your car environment without being connected to a service plan. The prices of service plans vary per provider and the number of years you subscribe and pay (up front) for.

Notwithstanding its apparent disadvantages, such as high price and not very simple installation of the SmartStart module, the convenience and the peace of mind it provides make this app well worth having.
